Every spring people in England head to the woods in search of one little treasure – the bluebell! Once a year the ancient English oak and birch woodland turns blue when, for a few weeks only, the bluebells transform the grounds into spectacular deep violet carpets amongst the trees.
These bluebell carpets of England are one of the best in the world. Thanks to the suitable damp climate the delicate bluebells thrive in this country and have become the definitive and finest sign of springtime.
The photos you see in this post were taken at Calke Abbey, Derbyshire, but dozens of other counties all over the country claim to be the best for the bluebells display. The spring is early this year, so do not miss the bluebells!
They are precious, and your photos are amazing, as always!

Yes, the English bluebells are precious, and in more ways than one because they are now under threat from a Spanish variety whose numbers have doubled in the past 15 years.

Really? How did the Spanish variety get into the English soil – by the Armada that failed?

“… the result of the cross-fertilisation of native bulbs with the Spanish invaders, which were introduced at least a century ago in ornamental gardens and have since spread rapidly to colonise vast tracts of British woods. ”
